The mayor has announced he's plugging £220m into the capital's boroughs to boost transport, town centre and public space developments.

Sadiq Khan said the funding will be used by boroughs across the capital for a range of projects, with initiatives to encourage walking and cycling, reduce road dangers and improve air quality.

Among the projects to receive funding, there'll be central London's first new park for 100 years at Alfred Place in Fitzrovia.

Transport for London (TfL) will invest £148m in Local Implementation Plans that support the mayor's transport strategy, as well as £70m for other schemes, including funding for strategic walking and cycling programmes such as Quietways – a network of low-traffic cycle routes throughout the capital, and Mini-Hollands – which encourage people to cycle more.

Khan said: "By making walking and cycling easier and safer, and funding projects that will improve air quality, we can help boroughs right across the capital to deliver transport and public space improvements that are going to make a real difference to the lives of Londoners."

All 33 of the capital's local authorities will benefit from the funding and Khan has pledged that more than £1bn will be invested across TfL's plan to 2021/22.

This year's Local Implementation Plan funding includes:

  • £3.6m to Westminster – including £200,000 to develop cycling, walking and bus proposals to develop the Strand and Aldwych area
  • £2.6m in Hounslow – including £120,000 for a new shared use Greenways route alongside the Longford River
  • £1m for Canada – with £380,000 to improve safety around areas and junctions prone to accidents such as Puddle Dock
  • £2.3m for Havering – as £250,000 gets splashed on Romford Market Place and a new market building
  • £2.9m in Croydon – including £750,000 for public realm improvements in South Norwood town centre such as widening footways and cycle paths
  • £3.8m to Lambeth – with £789,000 being spent on works at Norwood Road to make walking and cycling safer
  • £1.9m in Bexley – including £500,000 for safety measures to reduce the number of collisions in the borough
