Arise Lord Farage? Theresa May just refused to rule out a peerage for Nigel

Theresa May refused to rule out a gong for interim Ukip leader Nigel Farage in Westminster today.

Quizzed on the possibility of Farage entering the House of Lords by Scottish National Party MP George Kerevan at Prime Minister's Questions, May said only that “such matters are never discussed in public”.

While an appointment may seem unlikely, May's comments will fuel speculation that the government could bring Farage on board.

The MEP was the first non-US politician to meet with President-elect Donald Trump following his shock victory, with Farage subsequently offering to help the UK government build a relationship with the controversial billionaire.

However, it comes just days after Downing Street slapped down a clamour for Farage to be offered a job, with an official spokesman noting that Trump had stressed a desire to emulate the close bond between Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan.

"I don't remember there being a third person in that relationship," a Downing Street spokeswoman said on Monday.
