With Remembrance Day coming up, what better time for British Airways to announce it has become the first airline to sign up to the UK Armed Forces Covenant?

From today, it will be offering a 10 per cent discount to the armed forces, across all fares spanning its global network of 183 destinations, in all cabins (except first).

It is available to all serving armed forces, reservists, spouses of serving personnel, forces veterans, MoD civil servants, war widowers and cadet forces. It will be available through a secure website, where members of the armed forces will be able to make their booking and the discount will apply automatically.

It has also committed to giving reservists and military spouses the flexibility needed to allow for deployment or training schedules, and will support service leavers moving into civilian roles.

BA chairman and chief executive Alex Cruz, said: "This discount recognises the great service given by the men and women of the armed forces; we hope that it will make their well-earned holiday time with their families cheaper and easier."

Other pledges from BA in the Armed Forces Covenant include:

  • Promoting the fact that it's an armed forces-friendly organisation
  • Supporting the employment of veterans young and old
  • Ensuring that line managers understand the reserve commitment and ensure that reservists are fully supported and do not face discrimination
  • Supporting employees who choose to be members of the reserve forces, including by accommodating their training and deployment where possible; BA has a reservist HR policy in place and grants five days paid leave for reservists to undertake their annual training commitment
  • Endeavour to offer a degree of flexibility in granting leave for service spouses and partners before, during and after a partner’s deployment
  • Supporting Armed Forces Day and Reserves Day through its communication channels
