London City Airport has been evacuated after a fire alarm was set off and passengers were ordered onto the runway for safety.

The terminal building was fully evacuated this afternoon shortly after 4pm and the runway was closed to arrivals and departures. Airport spokespeople confirmed that emergency services are on site, though they had not yet been able to determine the cause of the fire alarm.

Passnegers took to social media to vent their frustration as they reported being marched out onto the tarmac and held next to parked aircraft as the alarms rang out at the east London airport.

The evacuation comes just 24 hours after nearby North Greenwich underground was closed down after a suspect package was found and police carried out a controlled explosion.
