Two groups of rival EU protesters are set to clash outside parliament in just over a week

Rival protesters are set to clash in London early next month when the campaign group March for Europe stages a second anti-Brexit demonstration in Westminster.

The group's last protest in July saw thousands of marchers take to the streets in the aftermath of the UK's vote to leave the EU.

And now demonstrators will return on 3 September for a new rally, with Labour-supporting comedian Eddie Izzard among those due to speak.

Parallel events are planned for Cambridge, Bristol, Oxford and Edinburgh. However, a rival group has responded by planning counter-action in London on the same day.

Supporters of website Spiked's “Invoke Article 50 Now!” campaign are planning to dispatch “a crack team” of roughly 20 counter-protestors.

“Our aim is to do some filming and try to change some minds and get people to come along to a demonstration of our own,” a spokeswoman said.

“Lots of London Islingtonian types might love painting themselves in the colours of the EU, but we will be there hoping to convince them of our case.”

The pro-Brexit campaign is also hosting a rally of its own outside Parliament on 5 September as MPs debate the possibility of a second referendum on EU membership, in response to an online petition.

Conservative think tank The Bow Group is backing the rally, which is expected to see much smaller numbers attend, and has accused MPs of seeking to thwart the Brexit vote.

“We cannot let this happen – 17.4m people voted to leave the European Union. This is the biggest democratic mandate in British political history, and it must be respected,” it said.
