In pictures: Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its concept electric Maybach and it is enormous

Mercedes-Benz's Maybach brand has never been one for the faint-hearted (or, indeed, thin-walleted). But now the company has unveiled the latest (conceptual) addition to its family – and it's a monster.

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, which will make its debut at Monterey Car Week in California this week, is a whopping six metres in length – Mercedes calls it a "homage to the glorious age of the aero coupes". And for the first time, it's electric.

According to the company, its underfloor battery gives it a range of more than 500km by one measure, or 200 miles by another.

As well as having a bonnet long enough to stage a Greek tragedy on, it's also more than two metres wide (good luck finding a borough in London with parking spaces wide enough for that) – but just 1.3 metres tall.

It features gullwing doors, which Mercedes reckons "underline the sporty character of the vehicle's silhouette".

Despite its classic appearance, Mercedes said it was not retro design: "This is a reinterpretation of classic, aesthetic principles."

This may be a concept, but if Mercedes doesn't hurry up, the technology could be out of date by the time it launches: yesterday Uber and Volvo announced a tie-up, under which Uber may begin testing driverless cars on the streets of London next year.

Last year the marque launched its S500 and S600 models, both characteristically luxurious (and also characteristically enormous), priced at about $200,000.
