All aboard: Here are four ways London will benefit from the Night Tube

London will join a handful of cities and make history when it finally launches its long overdue night tube services tomorrow.

The service has been delayed by a year, thanks to conflicts over pay and conditions with the RMT Union.

Over half a million people use the Tube after 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays – and the figure is forecast to rise as London continues to develop.

Here’s what the Night Tube will do for London…

Jobs

Transport for London (TfL) estimates that 1,965 permanent jobs will be supported by the Night Tube, majority of which will be linked to the night time economy, generating £80m a year. As the service boosts jobs, it will increase the capital’s appeal to foreign investments, and help to maintain London’s status as the most attractive city, reckons TfL.

Night time economy

A report, compiled by the Centre for Economic and Business Research for EY and business group London First, suggested unlocking London’s night-time economy will deliver a £3bn boost to the capital. Hospitality and catering are likely to benefit most, as the Night Tube unlocks the potential of longer operating hours.

Eased congestion

With a 24 hour service it is less likely Tube lines will become crowded at certain times due to fears of “missing the last train”. Reduced congestion at stations after events at entertainment venues means customers will have rather more pleasant journeys.

Safety

A larger availability of public transport during the night, may reduce demand for dodgy cabs, thus improving the safety of commuters.

TfL has confirmed there will be "an enhanced policing presence during the overnight services", with more than 100 police officers deployed to patrol the 144 stations open throughout the night each weekend – meaning travelling during the weekends should become safer.

An additional eight new 24-hour bus routes will also be added to help support the launch of Night Tube.

Mayor Sadiq Khan has said: “The routes will go hand-in-hand with the Night Tube to help Londoners get to and from their front door throughout the night. It’s another key step in helping everyone travel quickly and safely at night.” All aboard…
