Sir Philip Green, the former boss of BHS, has shot back at Frank Field, the MP leading the inquiry into the collapse of the high street retailer, accusing him of turning it into a "kangaroo court".

The latest saga in the tiff follows Green's threat of legal action over comments Field made about the retail tycoon following a damning report into the chain's fall into administration which ultimately laid blame at Green's feet and labeled him "the unacceptable face of capitalism".

Now, Green has hit back in a letter to MPs on the work and pensions select committee which is led by field and produced the report.

"Even before the parliamentary inquiry started hearing from witnesses, you turned it into little more than a kangaroo court, with your constant press campaign barracking and insulting me and my family and your announcement from day one that the predetermined result of the inquiry was that I either sign a large cheque or lose my knighthood."

Green said finding a solution to the plug a £571m blackhole in its pension fund lies with the Pensions Regulator and risked being derailed by Field's comments.

"If you continue to seek to usurp the Pension Regulator's role with your characteristically unfathomable statements and hurl daily abuse at us, any failure to arrive at a pensions solution will be down to you," said Green.

BHS stores across the country are in the process of closing down after the chain collapsed into administration 13 months after being sold by Green to Dominic Chappell's Retail Acquisitions for £1.
