Facebook has seen total earnings climb by 186 per cent for the second quarter, with more than a billion users checking into the social network every day on mobile.

According to the latest figures, 1.03bn people used Facebook daily on their mobile devices, up 22 per cent on last year.

Across all platforms the social networking giant reported 1.71bn monthly active users as of June 30, up 15 per cent from last year.

As a result, total revenues also climbed by a total of 59 per cent from $4bn to $6.4bn.

A huge proportion of this growth came from advertising revenues, which surged 63 per cent from $3.8bn to $6.2bn.

And mobile advertising revenue was particularly significant, representing 84 per cent of the total ad revenue for the second quarter, up from 76 per cent in the same three month period of 2015.

"Our community and business had another good quarter," said Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

"We're particularly pleased with our progress in video as we move towards a world where video is at the heart of all our services."
