Theresa May has been officially confirmed as the UK's new prime minister after she met the Queen earlier today.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron visited Buckingham Palace to formally tender his resignation earlier, after making an emotional speech on the steps of 10 Downing Street.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: "The Queen received in audience the right honourable Theresa May MP this evening and requested her to form a new administration.

"The right honourable Theresa May accepted Her Majesty's offer and kissed hands upon her appointment as Prime Minister and first lord of the Treasury."

May took the role after her sole rival to succeed Cameron, energy minister Andrea Leadsom withdrew from the competition earlier this week.

In comments outside 10 Downing Street, May has promised to tackle "burning injustice" and fight for all of the UK's citizens.
