France and Germany have called for a new British Prime Minister to be appointed as soon as possible in a meeting with the six founding countries of the European Union today.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said: “We will begin this process immediately, this has to be clear — the British people have spoken."

Ayrault added that "the 27 other EU members states have to be respected, as well”.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said: “This process has to begin as soon as possible, so that we’re not left hanging.”

The news after David Cameron stepped down as Prime Minister after Britain voted to leave the European Union.

Announcing his resignation yesterday Cameron said: "I fought this campaign in the only way I know how, which is it to say directly and passionately what I think and feel – head, heart and soul," Cameron said.

"I held nothing back. I was absolutely clear about my belief that Britain is safer, stronger and better off inside the European Union.

"The British people have made a very clear decision to take a different path and as such I think the country requires fresh leadership to take it in this direction.

"I do not think it would be right for me to be the captain that steers our country to the next destination."
