HSBC is moving nearly 1,000 technology jobs out of the UK, the bank has announced.

Some 840 jobs will be moved to other locations around the world, including India, China and Poland as part of its plans to cut thousands of jobs in the UK as part of a major restructure.

The roles, currently based in London, Sheffield and Tankersley in Yorkshire, are "non-customer facing" the bank said on Monday.

They will be moved outside of the UK by March next year, but HSBC said thousands of IT jobs would remain here.

"In our investor update in June 2015, and many times since, we have stated that we are targeting significant cost reductions by the end of 2017," said chief operating officer John Hackett.

"The UK will continue to play an important role in HSBC's global IT infrastructure, employing several thousand IT professionals," he added.

Europe's biggest bank last year unveiled a three-year plan that will result in more than 25,000 redundancies globally. It hopes to save more than £3bn each year through the cost saving.

Overall, 10 per cent of its more than a quarter of a million worldwide workforce will be axed.
