Facebook-owned Oculus starts shipping Rift virtual reality headsets
Deliveries of Oculus Rift headsets began today, with the virtual reality gear shipping to more than 20 countries and regions.
The company said the first to receive the new gadgets will be those who invested in Oculus during its crowdfunding campaign, conducted via Kickstarter. The firm will then start shipping pre-ordered Rifts mid-week.
Social media giant Facebook bought Oculus for $2bn (£1.4bn) in 2014. When announcing that the Rift headset was being made available for pre-order earlier this year, Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg said of the technology: "When you put on Oculus, you'll feel like you instantly teleported into adventures like deep-sea diving, piloting a starfighter or playing in a band on stage.
"More than 100 virtual reality games and other experiences are coming this year. And long term, I believe virtual reality has the potential to change the way we live, work and communicate in many ways. Today is an important step towards that future."
At the moment, Oculus said today, there are more than 30 games available on its store, as well as thousands of Facebook 360 videos available on Oculus Video, which will also feature livestreams from Vimeo and Twitch.
The company said it will "soon" be adding new partners and feature-length movies.
