European leaders and Turkey have come to an agreement to help stem the flow of migrants into Europe, President of the European Council Donald Tusk has confirmed.

Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka also announced the deal on Twitter: "Agreement with Turkey approved. All illegal migrants who arrive to Greece from Turkey starting 20 March will be returned!"

The agreement comes after a two day summit between Turkey and EU leaders.

The summit itself came after a deal was agreed in principle last week, in which the EU will give benefits to Turkey in exchange for the the country taking back all economic migrants reaching the Greek islands in an effort to close off the Balkans route.

"The Turkey deal was approved," Finland's Prime Minister Juha Sipila announced on Twitter.

In exchange for each Syrian migrant returned, Turkey wanted the EU to accept one refugee, as well as incentivise the country by offering extra funding and early access to European visas.
