Back on the (turn)table – Sainsbury’s to start selling vinyl records from March 21
In a blast from the past Sainsbury's will soon start selling vinyl records again for the first time since the 1980s.
Responding for booming demand for vinyl, which grew by over 60 per cent in 2015 and 70 per cent in the first quarter of 2016, from 21 March a mix of 18 contemporary and classic records will be on sale at 171 Sainsbury's stores across the UK.
Ranging from £12 to £20, the records will include classic artists such as The Beatles to more contemporary singers such as Amy Winehouse and Adele, whose latest album, 25, sold over 300,000 CDs in the retailer's stores
"We don't see this as a novelty gifting fad but a complimentary part of our existing music offer with a long term future in our stores. Vinyl is definitely experiencing a revival with demand growing stronger year on year," Pete Selby, Sainsbury's head of music and books, said.
"It is our aim to make the vinyl experience easy and pleasurable for our customers who are ready to re-engage with a format that resonates with them on an emotional level."
