When a member of staff moves on to pastures new, they usually get a small present bought by the whole office – but admirable Admiral chief exec Henry Engelhardt is turning the tradition on its head when he steps down in May. We like the cut of his jib…

As a way to say thank you to all the staff at Admiral, Engelhardt and his wife, Diane, are giving £1,000 to every full-time member of staff with one year’s service and £500 to all other staff, spending around £7m on the departure altogether.

Engelhardt said the gift was his way of saying thank you to the staff who have turned the business from a startup he launched 25 years ago to a FTSE 100 company worth £5bn today.

Henry Engelhardt said: “Saying thank you to all the… staff who work so hard every day to make Admiral great is the most important thing we can do. I am proud to have been part of the team of thousands who have created such a great business and great place to work."

"My wife and I just want to say a very sincere thank you to everyone at Admiral.”

Aaaah. Our timbers are shivering all over…
