Hilton Worldwide has unveiled plans today to launch a new hotel in the City after striking a franchise agreement with the developer of the £76m scheme.

The US conglomerate, which already has 35 hotels across the capital including a Hilton London near the Tower Bridge, said it will partner with the site's owner 4C Hotel Group to open a new hotel next to Aldgate station in 2018 under its lifestyle brand, Canopy by Hilton.

Work on the 500,000 square feet scheme at 16 Minories is already under-way and will also include a new block of flats, a public square and an office building.

Gary Steffen, global head of Canopy by Hilton said: “Canopy offers travellers a fresh experience in the lifestyle category with surprising extras and local know how. Aldgate was chosen for its proximity to both the stylish Canada and the more edgy and energetic East End.”

It will be the second hotel to open under the brand following the launch of Canopy by Hilton in Reykjavik, Iceland, this summer.

Al-karim Nathoo, managing director at 4C Hotel Group, said: “With a number of our hotels across East Africa and Canada operating under the Double Tree by Hilton brands, we are excited about the addition of the Canopy brand to our UK portfolio and the strengthening of our ongoing partnership with Hilton Worldwide. As the hotel industry continues to evolve we believe this lifestyle hotel will be a game-changing development in London.”
