This design may just become London’s newest bridge across the Thames connecting Nine Elms to Pimlico
A new design has been chosen as the option for a new bridge across the Thames connecting Nine Elms and Pimlico.
The pedestrian and cycle bridge designed by Bystrup and Robin Snell & Partners has been crowned the winner of a competition for a new crossing over the capital's river.
A panel of judges picked the spindly bridge concept from a four strong shortlist after receiving 70 submissions from around the world. They included Wandsworth Council leader Ravi Govindia, Lambeth Councillor Joanne Simpson, architect Graham Stirk, engineer Henry Bardsley and chair of Cabe at the Design Council, Pam Alexander.
The bridge design will be recommended to Wandsworth Council, who will make the final decision
Also invovled in creating the design were Sven Ole Hansen ApS, Aarsleff, ÅF Lighting Aecom, COWI Engineering and DP9.

"This was an extremely difficult choice between four excellent teams, but ultimately we felt that Bystrup and their partners had the most compelling approach to the challenges posed in our brief, said Graham Stirk, a senior partner at Rogers Stirk and Partners and one of the judges.
"Their strategy is elegant and simple, they aspire to celebrate the river and create a thing of real beauty which is what this bridge should be. Their light touch approach to landing points is commendable and the exploration of lighting and textured surfaces to manage movement across the bridge is both interesting and inventive. They see the bridge as a sustainable transport link and piece of new public realm which should be attractive, fun and a pleasure to use.”
£26m of funding is already earmarked for funding the bridge.
