Tessa Jowell to become next Mayor of London, according to analysis of polls

Dame Tessa Jowell is the only Labour candidate that can overcome Conservative Zac Goldsmith, an analysis of polls showed today.

A number of YouGov surveys on the mayoral contest has put Labour four points ahead of the Conservatives overall, on 42 per cent against 38 per cent.

And, in total, 17 per cent of respondents believed Jowell would be the best Labour candidate for Mayor of London, against just nine per cent for Sadiq Khan. Taking out those who answered they “don’t know”, the number increases to 39 per cent against Khan's 21 per cent.

Dianna Abbott and David Lammy trail with 16 per cent and 15 per cent respectively.

Conservative frontrunner Zac Goldsmith has 67 per cent of the support of the survey for who the best Conservative candidate for mayor would be. However, Sol Campbell came in second with 12 per cent, ahead of the three candidates that are still in the race – Stephen Greenhalgh, Syed Kamall and Andrew Boff.

The poll then asked who voters would choose if the competition was between Goldsmith and Jowell. Jowell took 56 per cent of the polls, while Goldsmith had 44 per cent.

In inner London, Jowell would beat Goldsmith by 64 per cent to 36 per cent. In outer London, she would still win, but by a narrower margin of 52 per cent against 48 per cent.

If the contest was between Goldsmith and Khan, however, the polling analysis suggests Goldsmith would win by 52 per cent against 48 per cent of the vote.

However, bookmakers, sometimes seen as having greater predictive power over polls, still expect Goldsmith to become the next Mayor of London, ahead of any of the Labour candidates.
