CHANCELLOR George Osborne has put his weight behind Robert Chote for a second term as chairman of the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

The chancellor said yesterday that he was nominating Chote to be re-appointed to the top job at the budget watchdog. The former director at the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) think tank was made the first permanent chairman of the OBR five years ago.

Chote will testify before the parliamentary Treasury Select Committee (TSC) – which is responsible for confirming his re-appointment – in the coming weeks.

The chancellor said Chote was “undoubtedly the best person for the job”.

He added: “I hope that the Treasury Select Committee will approve Robert’s re-appointment so that he can continue to lead the OBR for many more successful years to come.”
