Spurs fight back over Saido Berahino as Daniel Levy goes to war with Peace

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has hit back at West Brom counterpart Jeremy Peace and accused him of disrespect as the war of words over striker Saido Berahino escalated yesterday.

Peace turned down four Spurs bids for Berahino, two of them on Tuesday hours before the transfer deadline, and suggested that Levy had unsettled the 22-year-old by pursuing him.

Levy responded last night by criticising Peace’s frequent public statements on Tottenham’s interest, saying they – not the offers themselves – had inflamed the situation.

“We never make anything public, particularly in the best interests of the players involved,” he said. “Making aspects such as transfer requests public is wholly disrespectful to a player.”

Berahino spoke out just before the deadline when, frustrated at West Brom’s refusal to sell him, hewrote on social media that he would not play for Peace again.

The Baggies are expected to hold crisis talks with him on Monday.
