Jessica Ennis-Hill reasserts her class on mixed day for British pair

Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill admitted she did not expect to win gold after completing a remarkable comeback to the heptathlon with success at the World Athletics Championship yesterday.

Ennis-Hill, who gave birth to a son just 13 months ago, only decided to take part in Beijing following an encouraging display at the Anniversary Games in London last month.

But victory in the 800m clinched her second world title as fellow Briton Katarina Johnson-Thompson’s challenge faded with a bitterly disappointing series of fouls in the long-jump.

“If I’d come away with a bronze medal I’d have been happy. To get the gold is even better,” said Ennis-Hill, 29. “Juggling all my mummy duties and training has just been so hard. But it’s been the most amazing year because I’ve got my son and I’m back here on a global stage with a global medal.”
