If the price of travel to the States was putting you off, fret no more. You will soon be able to travel to the city of the Boston Celtics and sitcom Cheers for just £179.

Norwegian, a low cost airline, will be offering four flights a week from Gatwick to Boston from May 2016, the only direct link from Gatwick to Boston.

Chief executive Bjørn Kjos, who was a pilot before co-founding Norwegian, said:

The cost of flying to America has been too high for too long, and the success of our transatlantic flights show there is huge demand for quality, affordable long haul travel.

We are pleased to add Boston to our network from London Gatwick as we continue our exciting plans for UK growth.

The airliner will be undercutting the market by over 50 per cent. A British Airways flight from London to Boston in May would cost at least £600, while flying with Virgin Atlantic would set you back just over £1000 – and that's if you book now.

Kjos has previously extolled the virtues of budget airlines, saying that as fuel prices soared in the mid-2000s and amid competition from the likes of Ryanair and EasyJet, he realised to survive his airline would have to buy fuel-efficient planes and wanted to expand to new locations.

Norwegian launched UK flights in 2003. However, the airline has grown its routes and is now the third largest airline at Gatwick, as well as Europe’s third largest low-cost airline.
