Airports Commission report: Heathrow or Gatwick runway expansion? A decision will finally be made on Wednesday

We are finally going to find out the best way to accommodate the ever increasing number of people traveling to the UK by air.

The long-delayed decision by Sir Howard Davies's Airports Commission on the best way to expand airport capacity will be revealed on Wednesday after a long and hard-fought battle between Heathrow and Gatwick, each of which say they are the best option.

The three options on the table are: building a new runway at Heathrow, building a new runway at Gatwick or extending one of Heathrow's existing runways.

While waiting for the report has been painfully slow (much like waiting for a runway slot on a budget flight), and business leaders have been pushing for a final decision for some time, there may still be no proper resolution come Wednesday morning, leaving things, ahem, up in the air.

The Davies report is merely an independent recommendation and the government is unlikely to respond to its conclusions until later in the year, according to reports.

It may also be grounded by politics, with further reports claiming that a decision will be "fudged", with Davies offering up a preferred choice but not ruling out the other options to keep politicians happy.

So fold up your table and prepare for some turbulence, it's likely to be a bumpy landing for the long-awaited report when it finally lands.
