Chelsea mulling stadium move

CHELSEA are considering leaving Stamford Bridge for up to three years in order to install another tier below street level and increase the stadium’s capacity to 60,000.

The Premier League champions, who have previously been frustrated in attempts to relocate to Earl’s Court and Battersea, plan to showcase proposals this month as part of a consultation with supporters and local residents.

Roman Abramovich’s club could remain at the 42,000-seater ground while works are undertaken, but it is thought likely to be completed quicker if they were to rent elsewhere. Twickenham and Wembley are the most likely options for a temporary switch.

One plan discussed involves digging down into their home of 110 years to add a tier below street level, like that in Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
