Before jetting off to Hollywood to play for LA Galaxy, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard will join Gary Lineker in the BT Sport studio as a pundit for its Champions League coverage.

Harry Redknapp, Glenn Hoddle and Howard Webb will also join the channel's team for its biggest season of football to date.

BT will broadcast all 351 Champions League and Europa League games next season, and will make 12 Champions League and 14 Europa League games free to view via a new digital BT Sport Showcase channel.

As expected, the broadcaster today confirmed that full European football coverage will cost an additional £5 per month for broadband customers but will be free for TV customers.

It also unveiled a new BT Sport Europe channel and an ultra HD channel which boasts definition "four times the resolution" of standard HD.

Coverage of the Premier League, Scottish Premier and Football League, as well as Premiership Rugby will remain free for all BT Internet and TV subscribers.

Gerrard and Lineker will likely be expensive acquisitions for BT as it looks to draw in enough customers to offset the hefty £897m it paid to acquire European football rights.

Lineker's current annual salary with the BBC is believed to be worth around £2m and include a non-exclusivity deal with the broadcaster, freeing him up to add BT coverage to his Match of the Day work.

John Petter, chief executive of BT Consumer, said:

When we launched BT Sport we promised to make televised football far more accessible and affordable than it has been to date. We have opened the market to millions of new customers and we want to build on that as BT Sport becomes the undisputed home of European football.

This is a new chapter for European football on TV. BT Sport will show hundreds of live matches throughout the tournament using the very latest technology. Our presenters and experts will also provide the smartest insight and analysis.

On hectic Champions League nights, fans will be able to switch between matches using the red button and set a goal alert function in order to keep up with the latest goals as they fly in across the continent.

BT's share price is marginally up around 0.6 per cent today while shares in rival Sky are down around 0.78 per cent.
