Royal Dutch Shell BG Group deal: The 14 biggest M&A deals ever made

By: Lynsey Barber

Royal Dutch Shell's takeover of BG Group for a pretty impressive price tag of £47bn makes it the 14th largest M&A deal in history.

The latest deal may be big, but it doesn't even compare to the largest (though ultimately disastrous) merger of all time – AOL and Time Warner.

The biggest deal ever made in the oil and gas sector was the $80.3bn (£53.5bn) merger between Exxon and Mobil to create ExxonMobil in 1999.

The official merger between Royal Dutch and Shell Transport and Trading in 1995 came in just behind ExxonMobil at $80.1bn.

Here's how the deal stacks up against others.
