Refs’ chief in plea for video

REFEREES’ chief Mike Riley has called for English football to adopt video technology to enable officials to make more accurate decisions, following the controversial sending off of West Brom’s Gareth McAuley.

West Brom manager Tony Pulis made a similar plea after referee Neil Swarbrick mistakenly dismissed McAuley instead of team-mate Craig Dawson early in the Baggies’ 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.

“We need to see what technology we can use to help get referees’ decisions more accurate. Football as a whole has to look at it,” Riley said yesterday.

“Technology doesn’t provide a solution to everything but we can all think of case where a quick reference to a video replay would help us get the decision right.”
