Tesco reveals locations of 43 stores being shut

Tesco has revealed the locations of the 43 stores it plans to shut, resulting in around 2,000 job losses, as new chief executive Dave Lewis attempts to turn the struggling supermarket around.

Of the stores going, 18 are Expresses and 12 are Metros. Just seven are superstores, with a further six the homeplus format.

The plan was originally revealed on January 8, when Tesco revealed better-than-expected quarterly results, a wide-ranging new strategy and the hire of new UK boss Matt Davies.

As well as committing to a price war with the discounters, “Drastic” Dave Lewis said Tesco would shut 43 unprofitable shops and scrap plans for a further 49 as it looks to make massive savings.

In addition, the UK's largest retailer said it would hive off certain parts of the business, including music streaming service Blinkbox, which it sold to Australian firm Guevara earlier this week.

Lewis said today: “The decision to close the stores has been exceptionally difficult to take.  I recognise it will affect many hard working colleagues, our customers and local communities.

“Our priority is to explain what this announcement means for our colleagues and wherever possible, offer them alternative roles with Tesco.  We will continue to serve our customers through other local stores and our dotcom service.”
