Carillion and Balfour Beatty deal off as deadline passes ending mega-merger – for now

The 5pm deadline for Carillion to make an offer for Balfour Beatty passed yesterday not with a bang and barely a whisper.

However, while the £3bn deal is dead for now, some analysts say it may not be buried.

Commenting on BBC Radio Five Live’s Wake up to Money programme yesterday, Colin McLean of SVM Asset Management said: “It may not be the end of it – these things don’t ever die, they can still come back after a while.”

Meanwhile, a number of other analysts suggested that much would depend on how Balfour Beatty did over the next six months, with the planned sale of Parsons Brinckerhoff.

Balfour’s performance in the UK is also a key question as to whether Carillion, or even another bidder, may yet be back for more.
