Monarch Airlines has ditched baggage handler Swissport after a disastrous weekend saw passengers left without luggage for hours after arriving at Gatwick.

The carrier has cut ties with Swissport at Gatwick and Manchester, Travel Weekly reports, and will choose a new baggage handler in November according to the BBC.

More baggage delays are expected at Gatwick this weekend as Swissport faces severe staff shortages.

Gatwick today said that Swissport had failed to meet its baggage delivery standards: “Although bags are being delivered on time for 95 per cent of flights, this is not good enough.”

Gatwick will provide its own staff to help out the baggage handler and said it has also introduced a free baggage home delivery service for those who prefer not to wait.

“We are committed to providing an excellent service every day and will continue work with our handlers and airlines to deliver the high standards of service we expect," a Gatwick spokesperson said.
