Robert Swannell was feeling his age last night at the 30% Club seminar, held in Goldman Sachs’ Fleet Street den. Having just missed his old friend Sir Roger Carr (who’d nipped off before the drinks reception), the M&S chair spotted Carr’s daughter Caroline, who works for Goldman.

“It makes me feel old when I see Roger’s daughter,” he told The Capitalist. “I’ve known her since she was knee-high to a grasshopper.”

He was delighted to be at the event, however, and brimmed with confidence that the Club and businesses can help achieve gender balance at executive level. “It’s only a matter of time,” he told us.

Helena Morrissey, the 30% Club’s founder (who was described as a “force of nature” by Swannell) lived up to her capable reputation, dealing with a minor technical hitch with aplomb.

“The 30% Club is all about flexibility, we’re never wedded to our plans – now, we were going to show a video, but we can’t do it in here so we’ll have to move back into the other room,” she smiled. “I should have brought popcorn,” she joked, as the crowd moved back towards the cinema-like auditorium.
